Our Character We are a co-educational state secondary school of around 1450 students, 100 teaching staff and 45 support staff. The students are drawn largely from the area of Tawa which itself has a broad socio-economic mix. In that sense it is a microcosm of New Zealand society. Tawa College was officially opened in July 1961 and has always maintained a close involvement with the life of the local community, particularly through music and sport. Our Purpose With the support of our community we aim to provide a challenging, balanced education which strongly promotes achievement and preparation for life long learning.
Tawa College is a coeducational school (year 9 - year 13) situated in Tawa, New Zealand, and its principal is Murray Lucas. The Tawa College magazine is called Tawahi (pronounced tawa - he). There are currently around 80 teaching staff and 20 support staff. Tawa College was officially opened in July 1961 and has always maintained a close involvement with the life of the local community, particularly through music and sport.
Approximately 60% of students participate in at least one code. College teams participate in all sports organised in the Wellington-Porirua areas. When a code is played at the College, students may join non-school teams only with the permission of the College. Each sporting code relies for its continued success upon the assistance given by parents in transport, coaching, supervision and support.
Tawa College provides opportunity for participation in choral music through the all-comers Dawn Chorus, auditioned choirs like Twilight Tones, and barbershop groups Maiden Tawa (girls) and Acafellas (boys). Instrumental groups include the string orchestra, guitar groups, and concert band. There is also group training in strings, woodwind, brass, percussion and voice. Each June the college's choral groups are featured at a concert entitled June Tunes and, two to three weeks later, a Beat the Winter Blues concert features the school's instrumental groups.
